More likely, you will get a much more precise answer:<\/p><p data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"359\"><em data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"359\">\u201cI\u2019m Sardinian, from Cagliari.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"361\" data-end=\"364\">Or:<\/p><p data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"393\"><em data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"393\">\u201cI\u2019m Tuscan, from Siena.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"414\"><em data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"414\">\u201cI\u2019m Neapolitan.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"464\"><em data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"464\">\u201cI\u2019m from Milan, but my parents are Sicilian.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"925\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div accent, the food, the differences between northern and southern Italy, or even what life is like in a particular neighbourhood. To a foreigner, it may seem curious that, when Italians talk about Italy, <strong>where they belong tends to come up so quickly<\/strong>. But this is not simply a matter of local pride or <em>campanilismo<\/em>: behind this way of introducing oneself lies a much longer history.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75065750 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"75065750\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d8a074d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3d8a074d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A country that came after its identities<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b588e00 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2b588e00\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b1b6d61 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1b1b6d61\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72a1f2f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72a1f2f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"972\" data-end=\"1182\">If we look at a map of Italy today, we see a compact country, with clearly defined borders and a single state. It is an image that seems completely natural to us. Historically, however, it is relatively recent.<br \/><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">For much of its history, the Italian peninsula was not a unified state. Instead, it was made up of <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1326\">kingdoms, duchies, republics and cities<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, often politically independent and with very different traditions, institutions and interests.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1423\" data-end=\"1646\">Venice had its own political and commercial history. Florence had developed its own cultural and political identity. Naples belonged to yet another political reality. Sardinia and Sicily followed different historical paths.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">There was not yet an \u201cItalian\u201d identity in the modern national sense of the word. Instead, there were <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"1774\">concrete communities<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> to which people belonged: a city, a territory, a language, a tradition.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">When the Italian state was established in 1861, something rather unusual therefore happened: <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2030\">the unified state came after local identities that had already existed for centuries.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2191\">This is an important difference from other European countries, where a sense of national belonging developed more closely alongside the formation of the state.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">In Italy, at least to some extent, the process was almost the reverse.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">First came the local identities.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Then came the Italian state.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ace9711 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1ace9711\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a35195 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" elementor-size-default\">What does it mean to feel that you belong to a place?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22c50e4c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"22c50e4c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3084a1de e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3084a1de\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d7ed6eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d7ed6eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2515\">This is where a word we often use to describe Italians comes into play: <strong data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"2514\">campanilismo<\/strong>.\u00a0<em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2531\">Campanilismo<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> describes a strong attachment to one\u2019s own town or territory, often accompanied by the conviction that <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"2635\" data-end=\"2662\">\u201cwe do it better here.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">It is what can turn an innocent question such as:<\/span><\/p><blockquote data-start=\"2715\" data-end=\"2754\"><p data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"2754\"><em data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"2754\">\u201cWhat is the best Italian cuisine?\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"2756\" data-end=\"2781\">into an endless argument.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The pasta? Depends on where you come from.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The bread? Depends on where you come from.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Pesto? Better not even start.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Carbonara? Now things can get delicate.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"3152\">At first glance, these may seem like arguments about food. But if we look more closely, they reveal something more interesting: <strong data-start=\"3071\" data-end=\"3152\">the desire to defend a tradition and assert the value of one\u2019s own territory.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Food, in this sense, is not simply food. It is memory. It is belonging. It is a way of saying: <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"3249\" data-end=\"3324\">this is the place I come from; this is the history I recognise as my own.\u00a0<br \/><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The same is true of dialect, popular festivals, the landscape and even ways of speaking. The two identities can simply <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"3827\" data-end=\"3838\">coexist<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">A person can feel deeply connected to their own territory and, at the same time, consider themselves fully Italian. In fact, they may simultaneously have several levels of belonging: local, regional, national and even European.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Perhaps, then, it is more accurate to speak not of identities that exclude one another, but of <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"4165\" data-end=\"4192\">identities that overlap<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">There is no need to choose.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Being Italian does not erase being Emilian.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Being Italian does not erase being Neapolitan.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Being Italian does not erase being from Turin.\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"4365\" data-end=\"4436\">National identity includes local identity rather than replacing it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13441473 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"13441473\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c62c990 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-end=\"4574\">There is an interesting paradox here.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Italy is often described as an extraordinarily diverse country: accents, dialects, food, landscapes, certain habits and even the way people relate to their own territory can change considerably from one place to another.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">And yet this variety does not necessarily prevent people from feeling that they belong to the same country.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">In some way, <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"4920\" data-end=\"4977\">plurality itself has become part of Italian identity.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4979\" data-end=\"5118\">This is also why regional differences can be so important in everyday life without automatically becoming a rejection of national identity.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">When an Italian says:<\/span><\/p><blockquote data-start=\"5143\" data-end=\"5169\"><p data-start=\"5145\" data-end=\"5169\"><em data-start=\"5145\" data-end=\"5169\">\u201cI\u2019m from the Marche.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"5171\" data-end=\"5203\">they are not necessarily saying:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"5205\" data-end=\"5227\"><p data-start=\"5207\" data-end=\"5227\"><em data-start=\"5207\" data-end=\"5227\">\u201cI\u2019m not Italian.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"5229\" data-end=\"5280\">They might simply be saying something more precise:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"5282\" data-end=\"5375\"><p data-start=\"5284\" data-end=\"5375\"><em data-start=\"5284\" data-end=\"5375\">\u201cBefore I tell you about Italy, I want to tell you which part of this story I come from.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bdebd3e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"bdebd3e\" second?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a10785 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7a10785\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5fba2c7 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"5fba2c7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f3eccde elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f3eccde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"5476\" data-end=\"5524\">Perhaps the question itself is badly formulated.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">There is not necessarily a hierarchy in which regional identity comes first and national identity second. Rather, there are <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"5650\" data-end=\"5705\">different histories that have accumulated over time<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">A person can be Roman because they were born and raised in Rome, Italian because they belong to the Italian state, European because they recognise another dimension of their identity.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">One thing does not cancel out the other.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">And perhaps it is precisely this overlapping of identities that explains one of the most fascinating aspects of Italy: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"6054\" data-end=\"6175\"><b>a country that managed to build a national identity without completely erasing the identities that existed before it.<br \/><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Italy, in other words, did not come into being all at once.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">And perhaps it continues to be Italian precisely because <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"6295\" data-end=\"6331\">it has never been just one thing<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
