By the time you reach B2, you already have a solid vocabulary and a reliable grasp of Italian grammar. What you need next is not more beginner material, but texts that challenge you to understand, interpret and discuss Italian at a deeper level.
At B2 and C1, reading can become much more than a way to learn new words. Literature, essays and authentic Italian texts give you access to the language people actually use — and to the cultural references, ideas and ways of thinking behind it.
That is why I have selected five books that can genuinely help advanced learners develop their Italian through reading.
But there is one important point: reading alone is not enough.
To reach real fluency, you need to turn what you read into language you can actually use: discussing ideas, expressing opinions, making connections and speaking with confidence.

Book 1: A deep dive into grammar
This is not your first grammar book — and it should not be.
Grammatica avanzata della lingua italiana focuses on the structures that become increasingly important at B2 and C1: complex sentences, the use of the subjunctive in different contexts, and the nuances of written expression.
It also helps you understand distinctions that are often difficult to master simply by speaking, such as the use of Passato Remoto and Passato Prossimo in modern Italian.
Why is it essential?
At an advanced level, it is no longer enough to know that something is wrong. You need to understand why it is wrong and what a more precise alternative would be. This kind of grammatical awareness gives you greater control over your Italian — particularly when writing and expressing more complex ideas.
But grammar is only part of the picture. Knowing how a structure works is one thing. Being able to use it naturally when you are speaking is another.
Book 2: Contemporary Fiction: L'amica geniale (My Brilliant Friend) by Elena Ferrante.
Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels offer something extremely valuable to an advanced Italian learner: authentic, contemporary Italian in context. The language is modern, dynamic and full of natural dialogue, idiomatic expressions and emotionally powerful vocabulary.
Why is it essential?
Reading contemporary fiction helps you move beyond isolated vocabulary and understand how expressions actually work in context. You will encounter expressions that are much closer to the language of real communication than the carefully controlled sentences found in many language-learning materials. At the same time, L’amica geniale gives you access to a particular place, period and social reality in Italy.
That combination — language plus cultural context — is exactly what makes literature so useful at an advanced level. And it gives you something else to talk about. A character’s choices. A relationship. A social issue. A sentence that surprised you.
The moment you start discussing what you read, reading becomes conversation.
Book 3: Classic Italian essay and philosophy
If you want to move towards C1, you also need to encounter Italian that deals with ideas, not just stories.
Lettere luterane brings you into the intellectual and cultural world of Pier Paolo Pasolini through a collection of essays that explore Italian society, politics, culture and social change.
Why is it essential?
This is particularly valuable for learners who want to develop their ability to argue, interpret and express an opinion. The texts expose you to more complex vocabulary and abstract ideas, while also introducing you to an important voice in contemporary Italian cultural history. At this level, understanding a text is only the beginning. You should be able to answer questions such as:
- Do I agree with the author? Why?
- What is the author really arguing?
- Can I connect this idea to contemporary Italy?
These are precisely the kinds of questions that turn advanced reading into advanced speaking.
Book 4: The ultimate Italian dictionary
At B2/C1, relying exclusively on an English-Italian dictionary can become limiting. You need to start thinking in Italian and developing a more precise understanding of how Italian words work. That is where a monolingual dictionary such as Il Devoto-Oli becomes extremely useful.
Why is it essential?
A monolingual dictionary forces you to understand a word through Italian, rather than immediately translating it into your own language. It can help you explore:
- meanings and nuances
- synonyms and related words
- examples of usage
- pronunciation
- expressions and collocations
This is particularly important at an advanced level, when two words may have a similar translation but very different uses in Italian. The goal is not simply to know more words. It is to know the right word — and to know how to use it.
Book 5: Short stories or poetry
At first glance, Favole al telefono may seem like an unusual choice for an advanced learner. The stories are short, playful and often associated with children’s literature. But that is precisely what makes them useful.
Why is it essential?
Short texts allow you to focus on language structure, rhythm, vocabulary and meaning without having to process hundreds of pages at once. Rodari’s writing is also particularly useful for noticing how Italian can play with words, sentence structure and meaning.
You can use these stories to practise:
- reading aloud
- pronunciation and rhythm
- vocabulary in context
- summarising
- retelling a story in your own words
And that last step is particularly important. Reading something is passive. Retelling it is active.
When you close the book and try to explain the story in your own Italian, you discover very quickly which words and structures you actually know — and which ones you only recognise.
The ultimate resource: discuss these books in Italian
Buying these books is easy. Reading them is the next step. Using them to develop your Italian is where things get interesting. You can read L’amica geniale for months and still struggle to explain what you think about the characters. You can underline dozens of expressions in Lettere luterane without ever using them in a conversation. You can study advanced grammar and still hesitate when you need to speak.
That is because input and output are not the same thing. Reading gives you input. Conversation forces you to transform that input into your own language.
That’s why discussing what you read with a teacher can make such a difference at B2 and C1.
